Days 16 & 17

Learning Targets - Students will be able to...
Describe and compare biological, behavioral, cognitive, and sociocultural perspectives
- Summarize the evolution of modern psychological perspectives

Opener:  How do a person's individual experiences affect behavior?

Activity #1:  Find your "4 of a Kind" group.  Create a 2-3 minute skit that highlights the approach your group has been assigned.  In this skit you should include dialog and actions that help other students clarify the difference between your assigned approach and others.

9's - Biological

A's - Socio-cultural

Activity#2:  Following each group's performance, their classmates provide a critical review according to the criteria below.
- How clear was the storyline?
- How convincing were the actors?
- What other scenarios might be effective in demonstrating this particular psychological approach?

Day 15

Learning Targets - Students will be able to...
Describe and compare biological, behavioral, cognitive, and sociocultural perspectives
- Summarize the evolution of modern psychological perspectives

Opener - How might advertisers apply one of the six psychological perspectives in modern marketing strategies?  Give 2-3 specific examples.

Activity #1 - Return to the first day's exercise regarding a habit, or habits, that you would like to break ("You are that thing that you can't stop doing").  Outline a brief description from each of the 6 perspectives on how you might do this.  For example, what would a behaviorist likely say is necessary for you to break your particular habit?


Activity #2 - Now that you have outlined a broad description for changing a behavior from each perspective in psychology, create a more detailed outline for a behaviorist approach using operant conditioning.  Make sure that this plan includes a specific description and guidelines for how it would work, a means to measure effectiveness in changing th, and that it would be ethical and responsible.

Day 13

Learning Targets - Students will be able to...

Opener - Open your notebook to the "quotes" that you created during the last class period.  If you have not created quotes for each of the pioneers of psychology that illustrate their perspectives (Psychoanalysis, Behaviorism, Cognitive, Humanist, Biological, Gestalt), take these first few minutes to finish up.

Activity #1 (Cont'd) - Using the card that you have drawn from the deck, find your "4 of a kind".  Then take turns reading your manufactured quotes to each member of your group and see if they can match it to the appropriate person/perspective.

Activity #2 - Choose one of the brief articles below.  Each article discusses some aspect of one of the psychological perspectives that we have been examining.  After you have read the article, answer the following questions in your notebook.

1.  What was the most interesting part/passage from the article?
2.  How could you summarize the article in 140 letters/characters or less?
3.  What 3 questions would you pose to this author?

Days 11-12

Opener - What developments in modern society, beginning in the 1800's, might have encouraged research and growth of psychology?




Activity #1 - Mini-lecture pt 2 on "Modern Perspectives"
- Students are introduced to the concepts of structuralism, functionalism, psychoanalysis, behaviorism, and Gestalt psychology.

Activity #2 - Talking Heads - "Famous saying that were never said" 
- Based on your understanding of each of the pioneers of psychology, create a list of quotes that each might have said that illustrate their ideas.  For example:  "There is no difference in how a rat learns to navigate a maze than how a child learns proper manners."
- You should create at least 3 false quotes for each pioneer/perspective and then pair up with a classmate and read them aloud to see if they can accurately identify which pioneer/perspective it represents.

Day 10

UNIT ASSESSMENT DAY!!! WOOOOHOOOO!!!!

Opener:  Take 2-3 minutes and make sure you have your notebook, a writing utensil, and brain maps before we begin.

Activity #1:  Complete the multiple choice and statistical analysis portions of the quiz on Canvas.

Activity #2:  Begin the essay on a fresh sheet of paper in your notebook. 

Ensure that you do the following for the following mini-essay:
1.  Answer the prompt completely and accurately
2.  Provide specific evidence to support your answers
3.  Write a conclusion that answers "How" or "Why".
4.  Use key terms, statistics, or any other resource that you have available to be as detailed as possible in your response.


Prompt:  Why might some experts in the field of psychology criticize the use of medication to treat psychiatric conditions?

Close:  Identify which part of the assessment was most challenging and why.  Record your responses in the question section of your notebook.

1.  What happened to your reaction time as you worked through the activity?  Why do you think this happened?

3.  How else can we effectively measure how quickly and effectively our neurons can fire?
