Days 37 - Psychological Disorders - A Beautiful Mind

Activity #1 - Film Analysis - A Beautiful Mind

1. At what point in the film did you notice a change in Nash's behavior?  Were these early indications of a psychological disorder?

2.  What symptoms did Nash exhibit that would best aid in diagnosis of his disorder?

3.  What types of interpersonal interactions does Nash struggle with the most at the beginning of the film?

4.  To what extent does Nash's awareness of his own psychological disorder aid in his treatment of that disorder?

5.  What were the greatest challenges to those people around Nash in helping him cope with his disorder?


Activity #2 - Film Critcs Conference

Once the film has ended, and you have answered the questions above, 

  • Arrange the desks in a semi-circle at the front of the room
  • Each member of the group will share their responses to AT LEAST ONE of the following questions.
    • What did the film do well, in terms of representing the realities of psychological disorders?  Where did it fall short?
    • What lines or scenes that represented symptoms of the disorder were most captivating for the audience?
    • What questions did the film leave viewers with?
    • To what extent did the strengths and/or weaknesses of the individual actors affect your interest in this particular disorder?
  • Rate the film from 1 to 5 stars for each of the categories below:
    • Realism in portrayal
    • Clarity of message
    • Viewer relatablility
